Wildlife Corridor Signs

David Colley, of SmArt Bear Box, fabricated a creative Wildlife Corridor sign in response to Jasper, a locally loved bear, who experienced a tragic death. He brought  samples of his sign to Jasper’s Memorial Service and gave one to Ann Bryant, founder of the Tahoe Bear League.

Public response at the Memorial  inspired another way to re-frame the public narrative from “What are bears doing in my yard”  to… “how can I ensure the well being of my family and native wildlife, now that I realize we share habitat”  Changing our culturally-created reaction to wildlife could lead to more productive ways to co-exist.

This interest launched a collaboration between: Sustainable Tahoe, Tahoe Bear League, Bear Smart and SmArt Bear Box (David Colley), along with support from the Truckee Roundhouse, to compliment existing education efforts of Tahoe Bear League and Bear Smart programs. Since wildlife use creeks to migrate from mountains to the Lake, we could post the signs where human paths intersect these creeks to inspire more respect and protection along these pathways.  If you live near a creek corridor, you may have more bear sightings than other areas.

Incline Village is installing 12 customized Wildlife awareness signs on Bear Boxes located along ‘Third’ and ‘Incline’ Creek in Incline Village. In response to growing interest from agencies, businesses and homeowners, David is building custom signs – ready to install on bear boxes, or posts. Along with IVGID, Tunnel Creek Station has one, a private resident, Diane Hirsch bought the first one for her bear box and Lara Pearson, of Brand Geek has sponsored a sign to be posted along Third Creek. There is also a sample sign at the Incline Village Visitor Center, where they can be ordered.

If you live on or near a creek, or habitat with high bear and human traffic, please let us know so we can note it for a sign, or order one that you can post/install.

Each $300.00 signs is cut from 14 or 16 gauge sheet metal. The Lake part is 16″ x 30″, powder-coated blue. The front part is 11.5″ x 16″ and left unfinished (so it can weather, which is the preferred look).

35% if each sale goes to the NGO’s supporting this effort.
